Meskel – Finding of the True Cross
Meskel is one of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s most important celebrations, commemorating the discovery of the True Cross by Empress Helena in the fourth century. The festival is best known for the Damera, a large ceremonial bonfire surrounded by prayers, traditional chants, music, and dancing.
The largest celebration takes place in Meskel Square in Addis Ababa, where thousands of worshippers and visitors gather to witness colorful religious processions and cultural performances. Meskel is celebrated annually on 27 September.
Timkat – Ethiopian Epiphany
Timkat is Ethiopia’s most spectacular religious festival, celebrated on 19 January to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. The celebration begins on the eve of the festival with magnificent processions carrying the sacred Tabot, a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, from churches to ceremonial sites.
Throughout the night, worshippers gather for prayers, hymns, and traditional celebrations. The following morning, water is blessed and sprinkled over the faithful, symbolizing spiritual renewal and baptism. The colorful processions then accompany the Tabots back to their churches. Gondar and Addis Ababa are among the most popular destinations to experience the beauty and tradition of Timkat.
